Environmental Responsibilities

At W.S. Barrett & Son Ltd, we recognise the responsibility we have to operate in a way that respects the environment while continuing to deliver reliable, high-quality engineering solutions. Based in Boston, Lincolnshire, we work closely with agricultural and horticultural businesses, industries that rely on sustainable land use and long-term resource management.

Our approach to environmental responsibility is practical and embedded into how we design, manufacture, and supply machinery and equipment. By producing durable, repairable products such as machinery, trolleys, and bespoke engineering solutions, we help our customers extend product life cycles, reduce waste, and minimise the need for frequent replacements.

We aim to reduce environmental impact within our operations by using materials efficiently, minimising waste during manufacturing, and recycling metal and other suitable materials wherever possible. Our engineering processes are continually reviewed to improve efficiency and reduce unnecessary energy use without compromising quality or safety.

Wherever practical, we support refurbishment, maintenance, and repair of existing equipment. This not only provides cost-effective solutions for our customers but also reduces the environmental impact associated with manufacturing new machinery from scratch.

As a long-established British engineering company, we are committed to responsible working practices that support both our customers and the wider environment. We continue to look for sensible, achievable ways to improve sustainability across our business while maintaining the high standards of engineering and service we are known for.

Environmental Gains

Handful Of Recycled Material

At W.S. Barrett & Son Ltd, we have improved our waste management by recycling all scrap steel, aluminium and metal offcuts from our fabrication processes. Cardboard, plastics and packaging materials from deliveries are also separated and recycled wherever possible to reduce landfill waste.

Responsible Waste Management

We have made practical changes to reduce energy consumption in the workplace. This includes upgrading to LED lighting in workshop and office areas, ensuring machinery is switched off when not in use, and scheduling production runs efficiently to minimise unnecessary power usage.

Energy Efficiency Improvements

To reduce material waste, we carefully plan cutting lists and fabrication processes to maximise sheet and section usage. By improving stock control and ordering only what is required for each project, we minimise surplus materials and unnecessary transportation.

Reducing Material Waste

We also review our suppliers and processes to encourage more environmentally responsible practices. Where possible, we source materials from UK suppliers to reduce transport emissions and we continually assess opportunities to improve efficiency across our horticultural and agricultural engineering operations.
